About

Rainbow Beach is a coastal rural town and holiday village in the Gympie Region. It is home to a range of amazing activities and things to do that can entertain you during a stopover or for a couple of nights stay. It has been a popular destination not only for its own amazing landscapes and scenery, but also as a gateway to Fraser Island.

Why is it called Rainbow Beach?

The town's name is due to the rainbow-coloured sand dunes surrounding the settlement, there are up to 72 different colours in various tones and hues. This process happened over thousands of years as the cliffs lining the beach eroded.

There is also a story from the native inhabitants of the area that the sands are the resting place of a rainbow that fell from the sky and shattered into pieces along the shoreline, all for the love of a woman. Due to this, it is considered a spiritual place of safety for women who visit as the rainbow still protects the area.
